World Teachers’ Day – Friday 29th October

Read Time: ( words)

Today, Australia celebrates and thanks the teaching profession.

World Teachers’ Day is held internationally in early October. As it falls during the school holidays for many parts of Australia, we celebrate a little later.

Teachers (with support from parents and carers) have ensured education continues across the country this year, despite major challenges. It has reinforced the significant role teachers play in the lives of children and students, their families and communities.

Today, let’s celebrate being part of a remarkable profession and its bright future, or say thank you to our teachers.

Best & Fairest

The Phoenix P-12 Community College Senior Boys Football team took part in a shortened BAS 2nd XVIII season this year. The team played only four games for this short season managing to claim a victory against Ballarat Grammar. We would like to congratulate the team on displaying a fantastic attitude throughout the year. The coaches were particularly impressed with the team’s effort and look forward to going further in 2022.

This award is given to the player who best displays the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Cooperation and Excellence. This includes both on and off the field. Brody is one of the most consistent players in the team as he always puts in 100% effort each and every game. He primarily played in the midfield this year. Brody is our College Captain and always leads by example.

The Coaches Award is awarded to a player who week in and week out plays his role for the team. They do what is best for the team. Sean is a player who always led by example. His attack on the ball and repeat efforts were particularly impressive and motivates his teammates throughout the year simply through his actions. He is a Year 11 student who primarily played down back this season.

Joshua has been a part of the Senior Boys Football team for many years now. He is a very talented footballer who has played in many different positions this season; playing predominantly in the ruck and also as a key forward and did a fantastic job. Joshua is a Year 12 student so unfortunately this was his last year with our team. We thank him for his efforts and wish him all the best in the future.

Kingsley is another player who has been a part of the Senior Boys Football team for many years. He has been ultra-consistent throughout our shortened season as seen by how consistently he polled votes. Kingsley is a smooth mover with great evasive skills. He is a very good user of the football and consistently applies great tackling pressure to the opposition. His work ethic is fantastic and sets the example for the rest of his teammates. Well done on an outstanding season Kingsley.

Jo Collins – Class of 2013

Occupational Therapist

Growing up I knew that I wanted to work with people in health or education. However, I was pretty unsure what that specifically meant and I even questioned what I wanted to do in life after Year 12.

Following graduating Phoenix College in 2013, I completed a Bachelor of Psychological Science at Deakin University in 2016. After that I then continued my studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) at Deakin University in 2020. During my final year studying Occupational Therapy, I completed a research project investigating academic staff and students perspectives of cultural safe and responsive content taught within Occupational Therapy curriculum. With hopes to continually improve culturally appropriate practice within my profession. I am now a registered Occupational Therapist with a keen interest working alongside children and their families.

I believe Phoenix was able to provide me support in terms of transitioning from a high school environment to university. I took advantage of opportunities provided such as taking students on university tours to Federation University, Deakin University etc; providing career pathway support, keeping students up to date with key events and important information required as part of that transition.

My advice to current students would be to not waste your time comparing yourself to others! Everyone is on their own path, have their own strengths/weaknesses, personal battles and changing circumstances. It is easy to compare yourself to others, but it can steal a lot of years of happiness and self-love. But I am learning that whether you are 18, 48, or 98 it is okay to change your mind about what your goals may be.
